Cholescintigraphy
Gentle examination of the liver, gallbladder and bile ducts
What is cholescintigraphy?
Cholescintigraphy is a modern functional examination that shows how your liver, gallbladder and bile ducts are working. It allows doctors to determine whether bile is flowing properly and whether the gallbladder is contracting well.
When is the examination performed?
- For abdominal pain and gallbladder problems.
- When cholecystitis or bile duct obstruction is suspected.
- After surgery (to check patency or rule out bile leakage).
- For long-term digestive problems or liver disease.
How is the examination performed?
- A small dose of radioactive substance will be administered into your vein, which will be quickly absorbed by the liver and excreted into the bile.
- A special camera monitors how the substance passes through the liver, gallbladder and into the intestines.
- If necessary, you will also be given a small "fatty meal" or medication to determine how well your gallbladder contracts.
- The examination takes about 1–2 hours and is completely painless.
How to prepare?
- If you do not have a gallbladder, do not eat or drink anything for 4–6 hours before the examination.
- If you have a gallbladder, eat 5-10 dkg of chocolate about 3 hours before the examination.
- Long periods of fasting (more than 24 hours) are not recommended.
- Inform your doctor about any medications you are taking, especially if you are taking opiates – they may affect the results.
Is the examination safe?
Yes. The amount of radiopharmaceutical used is small and safe. The examination has been performed for many years and has only a low radiation exposure.
