Gastric evacuation scintigraphy
A gentle examination that shows how your stomach digests
What is gastric emptying scintigraphy?
This is a modern examination that monitors how quickly and correctly your stomach empties after eating. This allows doctors to determine whether your problems are caused by a disorder of gastric motility.
Why is the examination performed?
- When you feel full, bloated, nauseous or vomit.
- For diabetes (a common cause of slow emptying, known as gastroparesis).
- After certain stomach operations.
- If accelerated emptying is suspected (e.g. dumping syndrome).
How is the examination performed?
- At the beginning, you will eat a light test meal (e.g. rice pudding) mixed with a small dose of radioactive substance.
- You will then lie down under a special camera that monitors how the food gradually leaves your stomach.
- The imaging takes 1–2 hours, sometimes longer (up to 4 hours).
The examination is completely painless and takes place in a calm environment.
How to prepare?
- Do not eat or drink anything for 6 hours before the examination.
- It may be necessary to temporarily discontinue certain medications that affect digestion – follow your doctor's recommendations.
- Wear comfortable clothing.
Is the examination safe?
Yes. We only use a very low dose of radiopharmaceuticals, which has no effect on your health. The examination is routinely performed and has proven itself over the long term.
