Scintigraphy of gastro-oesophageal reflux (GER)
A gentle examination that shows the return of gastric juice to the oesophagus
What is reflux?
Reflux means the return of stomach contents back into the oesophagus. It can manifest itself as heartburn, belching, chest pain, but also chronic coughing or hoarseness.
What is GER scintigraphy?
It is a modern and painless examination that monitors whether stomach contents return to the oesophagus and to what extent.
When is the examination performed?
- For heartburn, regurgitation (return of food to the mouth).
- For chronic cough, hoarseness or repeated respiratory tract infections.
- If other examinations (e.g. endoscopy) have not yielded clear results.
- To check the effectiveness of reflux treatment.
How is the examination performed?
- You will drink a small amount of liquid (e.g. water or juice) to which a very low dose of radioactive substance has been added.
- You will lie on the examination table while a special camera monitors whether the liquid returns to the oesophagus.
- The examination takes about 30–45 minutes, sometimes longer if necessary.
The entire examination is painless and takes place in a calm environment.
How to prepare
- Do not eat or drink anything for 4–6 hours before the examination.
- You can usually take your regular medication unless your doctor tells you otherwise.
Is the examination safe?
Yes. The radiation exposure is very low, lower than in a standard CT scan. The method has been used routinely for a long time.
