Scintigraphy of gastrointestinal bleeding

A gentle examination that helps detect the source of bleeding in the digestive tract

What is GIT bleeding scintigraphy?

It is a modern imaging method that allows doctors to determine the source of bleeding in the digestive tract (small and large intestine).

This examination is performed when other methods (such as endoscopy) have not revealed the cause or cannot be performed at that moment.

Why is the examination performed?

  • In cases of repeated or hidden (occult) bleeding leading to anaemia.
  • After surgery, when bleeding is suspected in the area of sutures or joints.

How is the examination performed?

  1. A blood sample is taken to obtain your own red blood cells, which are labelled with a small amount of radioactive material.
  2. These cells are then returned to your vein.
  3. A special camera then monitors whether the labelled blood cells are being excreted into the digestive tract.
  4. The monitoring lasts for about 1–2 hours at first, but can continue for longer (up to 24 hours) if necessary.

The examination is painless and safe.

How to prepare

  • Come on an empty stomach (no food for 6 hours, but you may drink water).
  • Otherwise, no special preparation is necessary.
  • Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Is the examination safe?

Yes. Only a small amount of radiopharmaceutical is used, which has no effect on your health. The examination has been proven over many years and is very sensitive.
