Thyroid scintigraphy

A gentle examination to check thyroid function

What is thyroid scintigraphy?

Scintigraphy is a modern imaging method that shows how your thyroid gland is functioning and how its activity is distributed. This allows doctors to determine whether any part of the gland is working more or less than it should.

When is the examination performed?

  • When the thyroid gland is enlarged (goitre).
  • When there is suspicion of nodules in the thyroid gland.
  • In cases of dysfunction – excessive or reduced activity.
  • When searching for the thyroid gland in an atypical location.
  • During follow-up after treatment.

How is the examination performed?

  1. A small dose of radioactive substance (99mTc) will be administered into your vein.
  2. After a short wait, you will lie down under a special camera that scans your neck.
  3. The examination is painless and takes approximately 20 minutes.

How to prepare

  • Your doctor will tell you in advance whether you need to stop taking thyroid medication or wait after being given iodine-based contrast agents.
  • Otherwise, no special preparation is necessary.
  • Wear comfortable clothing for the examination.

Is the examination safe?

Yes. The radiation exposure is low and the examination is safe even for patients with multiple diseases.
