DaTScan – brain examination

A gentle examination that helps distinguish Parkinson's disease from other conditions

What is DaTScan?

DaTScan is a special brain scan that shows how the nerve cells responsible for producing dopamine are functioning. Dopamine is a substance that is important for proper movement and coordination.

If these cells are declining, it may be Parkinson's disease or other similar disorders.

Why is the scan performed?

  • To distinguish Parkinson's disease from essential tremor.
  • In cases of unclear problems with tremors, stiffness or slowed movement.
  • To distinguish between different types of Parkinson's syndromes.
  • Sometimes also in cases of dementia, where the examination can indicate the cause of the problems.

How is the examination performed?

  1. A small amount of radioactive substance is injected into a vein, which binds to dopamine transporters in the brain.
  2. After a break (about 3-6 hours), imaging with a special camera follows.
  3. The imaging itself takes approximately 30–45 minutes.

The examination is completely painless.

How to prepare

  • Some medications must be temporarily discontinued in advance (e.g. certain antidepressants or stimulants). Your doctor will inform you of everything in good time.
  • Otherwise, no special preparation is necessary.

Is the examination safe?

Yes. The radiation exposure is low and the method is safe in the long term. It is only unsuitable during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
