Perfusion scintigraphy of the lungs

A gentle examination to assess blood flow in the lungs

What is lung perfusion scintigraphy?

This is a modern examination that shows doctors how blood flows to individual parts of the lungs. It helps to detect blood flow disorders, for example, when pulmonary embolism is suspected.

Why is the examination performed?

  • When pulmonary embolism (blockage of the pulmonary artery by a clot) is suspected.
  • For long-term shortness of breath or pulmonary hypertension.
  • Before lung surgery (to determine how each part functions separately).
  • To evaluate certain lung and heart diseases.

How is the examination performed?

  1. A small amount of radioactive substance is injected into a vein and spreads through the pulmonary vessels.
  2. You lie on the examination table and a special camera scans your chest from different angles.
  3. The examination usually takes only 15–20 minutes.

It is a painless and comfortable examination.

How to prepare?

  • No special diet or discontinuation of regular medication is necessary.
  • Please come to the examination in comfortable clothing.

Is the examination safe?

Yes. Only a small amount of radiopharmaceutical is used, the radiation exposure is low, and the method has been proven over many years.
