Dynamic renal scintigraphy
A gentle examination that shows how your kidneys and urinary tract are functioning
What is dynamic renal scintigraphy?
This is a modern functional examination that allows doctors to monitor:
- How blood flows to the kidneys.
- How the kidneys filter waste products.
- How urine flows through the ureters to the bladder.
This allows the function of each kidney to be assessed separately.
Why is the test performed?
- For congenital or acquired kidney diseases.
- When assessing the function of each kidney before surgery.
- When narrowing of the urinary tract (obstruction) is suspected.
- In patients with recurrent urinary tract infections or stones.
- To monitor the function of a transplanted kidney.
How is the examination performed?
- A small amount of radioactive substance is injected into a vein and excreted in the urine.
- The patient lies comfortably on their back and a special camera monitors kidney activity.
- The examination usually takes about 30 minutes.
- If necessary, the doctor may also administer a diuretic (furosemide) to determine whether the urinary tract is clear.
The examination is painless and safe.
How to prepare
- Drink plenty of fluids (0.5–1 litre of water 30–60 minutes before the examination).
- It is advisable to empty your bladder before the examination.
- It is not necessary to stop taking your regular medication unless your doctor tells you otherwise.
Is the examination safe?
Yes. A small amount of radiopharmaceutical is used and the radiation exposure is low. The method is common, long-term proven and well tolerated.
